Part of the Duchy of Cornwall since 1337, the Isles of Scilly have been home to man since the Neolithic times. These days only five of the 200 islands and rocky outcrops of the archipelago are inhabited - the remainder providing sanctuary for many rare and interesting birds.

The warm clear climate encourages many exotic plants and enables the islands to support a flourishing flower industry, while wet fish and shell fish from the sparkling seas are becoming legendary in culinary circles.

The unique environment of the islands is treasured by the many tourists who return year after year to enjoy a level of wild beauty and tranquility hard to match anywhere else in the world.

St. Mary's is the perfect holiday centre for all, offering a wide variety of attractions as well as providing an ideal base from which to explore the surrounding islands using the daily launch service.

With its pubs, restaurants and shops, St. Mary's itself has plenty of interest for everyone, while those with a feeling for the past will find much to occupy their thoughts. A walk around the island will highlight the drama of the Scillonian scenery while on the quieter side a visit to the bulb fields is always worth while. Children especially will enjoy the safe bathing and fine sandy beaches. For the more active, there is sailing, fishing, windsurfing, golf, tennis, squash, diving and snorkelling.
