Narcissi are a genus of the Amaryllidaceae family, and are known as daffodils, jonquils, Lent lilies and many other names throughout the globe. The bulbs originated in the Mediterranean and can be found from the Iberian peninsular, France, Italy, around the Balkans and the Middle East.
As easily grown bulbous flowering plants, they have been popular since Ancient times, and indeed the name is thought to derived from the Greek for “intoxicated”, although rendered into the Latin by Pliny the Elder as narcissus. Cultivated in large numbers in the Netherlands since the sixteenth century, they were introduced to the Isles of Scilly in the nineteenth century, probably brought back to the islands by Scillonian pilots and seamen. They thrive here due to the sub-tropical climate, and have been a staple of Scillonian agriculture since 1879, when the first consignment of flowers was sent to Covent Garden by William Trevellick of Rocky Hill Farm.
Since then, the flower industry has thrived on the islands.

EVENING SERVICE UPDATE: Despite having tried and tried to get satisfactory chefs this year for our evening service, it has proven impossible. Whether due to various personal problems or unacceptable behaviours, we have been let down badly, time and again. Although the rest of our team have been rallying round, our latest chef (who has been very good), has decided he can’t cope with the workload and has given in his notice.
With huge reluctance, and after much discussion and consultation with my day time chefs and other staff, I have decided we can no longer offer evening service for the rest of the summer. I know restaurants all over the country are struggling to find good chefs, and the challenge of hiring and retaining anyone suitable is just too big.
This is my 40th year running Juliet's Garden and I'm very sorry not to be able to offer visitors and locals the evening meals we've so enjoyed over the years, but with huge regret I no longer have any choice.
We are contacting anyone who has a table booked with us in the evening, but as you can imagine, it's rather a large job! Please either pop in, ring on 01720 422228 or email office@julietsgardenrestaurant.co.uk if you have a table booked and if you haven't heard from us yet.
The good news is that we will continue with our lovely, efficient day time service, 7 days a week, so please do come and see us for lunch, cakes, cream teas and drinks. We also hope to stay open into the evening a couple of times a week for cocktails and nibbles. Watch this space!
